At Fujitsu Siemens Computer’s VISIT conference “For a better business. For a better planet.” was debated by the Company President and CEO Bernd Bischoff and CTO Dr. Joseph Reger. The main topic was to discuss if “green IT” can have a positive impact to enterprise’s bottom line. Bernd Bischoff charged “are the arguments today strong enough to make company management change their current purchasing policies?”
CTO Dr. Joseph Reger showed that green IT has a relevant impact in the context of cost reduction. “Energy efficiency is a bottom line driven question and customers are making IT accountable of their electricity bill. As an industry and as a company, we have to deliver cost savings to the customer.”
Both executives addressed the company’s current strategy to determine if it is on the right path to be environmentally friendly. Fujitsu Siemens Computers is a pioneer in providing environmentally friendly technology and processes, throughout the lifecycle of each product. The company was first to implement a recycling program (1988), first to introduce a Green PC (1993), first to launch a green Consumer PC (2007) and the only vendor worldwide with notebooks compliant to Nordic Swan. It also has the most energy efficient server on the market with the PRIMERGY TX 120. In addition, the company has a full – and growing- range of environmentally conscious products and is a member of the Climate Savers Computing Initiative and Green Grid organizations.
“You can’t make a company green overnight and it is time to set the record straight. We have the history and the heritage in green, we have a long list of industry firsts,” Dr. Reger said.
In addition, the executives addressed the future roadmap for green IT: “Results can be delivered only by technology and innovation. Our dynamic data center strategy requires less physical hardware and has fewer underutilized systems. And desktop virtualization allows to promote work-at-home-type environments, which reduces commuting costs,” commented Dr. Reger during the keynote.
“It is no longer a question of “either/or”. And that’s what we mean when we say “For a better business. For a better planet,” concluded Bernd Bischoff. “I would even go one step further, saying green IT is not just a “nice to have” because it combines business and environmental benefits. I rather would say it is a “must-have” when customers think about their future.”
